Lag and Anti-Lag, what is it ?

The response time of a turbo engine is known as lag, and is due to the more or less rapid boost (turbo pressure) rise when accelerating. This lag time depends on many factors, the main ones being the size of the turbo and the engine RPM. During acceleration, the boost drops with each gear shift and requires a short time to build up again. Anti-lag aims to reduce or even eliminate turbo lag, and increase the overall performance of the vehicle. It can be useful in drifting, but also and especially in timed categories such as rally or track racing.

There are different types of anti-lag devices or strategies, the most popular being commonly known as "bang-bang". Very destructive, it consists (in a nutshell) of igniting unburned gasoline in the exhaust manifold, generating significant explosions to keep the boost up and benefit from a higher torque instantly, on re-acceleration. However, this system is very tough and causes rapid wear of the turbo and its peripheral components because of the high stress and overheating it generates. It is therefore used only at high levels of competition because it requires a high maintenance budget.

Turbosmart ALV40 Gen V Anti-Lag Valve Specifications

Operation of the Turbosmart anti-lag valve is different from a "bang-bang". It is more like a dump valve which recirculates its air in the exhaust manifold, just before the turbo: when lifting off the foot from the gas pedal, the Ø40 mm anti-lag valve opens, triggered by engine vacuum. Fresh air then circulates from the intake to the exhaust manifold, pushed by the inertia of the compressor. This fresh air not only reduces operating temperatures, but also circulates in the turbine to keep the boost up for the duration of a gear change.

The Turbosmart anti-lag valve is supplied with all its accessories (two V-Band clamps, inlet flange, various gaskets and hardware), except its optional outlet flange to be chosen above according to your needs. The connection of the valve to the exhaust manifold requires fabrication according to your engine configuration.
