Dump Valves
Why use a dump valve (or blow-off valve)?
Used on turbocharged gasoline engines, the dump valve is a mechanical part installed on the intake pipe which reduces lag when you open the throttle again and improves the reliability of the turbo.
When we step on the gaz pedal, the turbo compresses the air and discharges it through the intake to supply the cylinders. When we release the pedal, the throttle plate closes but the turbo continues to spin due to its inertia and generates excess pressure. This can cause harmful back pressure which can reverse the rotation of the compressor and turbine.
The main purpose of the dump valve is therefore to release this excess pressure to protect the turbo and improve its response. There are bypass valves (closed loop operation) which discreetly vent air back to the intake manifold, and vent-to-atmosphere blow-off valves (open loop) which discharge it directly into the engine compartment by making the famous "whoosh" noise.
Depending on the products, we can find membrane dump valves suitable for stock pressures and single piston or double piston models designed for larger boost setups.
