The exhaust system is responsible for channeling and venting the gases burnt by the engine to the outside of the car and reducing the combustion noise. Via a catalytic converter, it also helps lower the toxicity of exhaust gases. This assembly must be perfectly sealed to ensure it works properly.
At its simplest, the exhaust is made up of several components such as the manifold, the intermediate pipe and the muffler. Additional parts can be added to the system, such as lambda sensor, particulate filter, catalytic converter, etc.
The exhaust can be uprated to improve engine performance and increase power by changing the diameter, length and shape of the pipes. The choice of material used (steel, stainless steel, titanium, etc.) can also have an impact on the service life of the system, the sound of the engine and on the performance of the vehicle: faster gas venting, overall weight reduction...
