A true best-seller from MSD, the Digital 6AL ignition box provides a multi-spark capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) capable of delivering full ignition power throughout the rev range. This evolution of the iconic analogue model features a microprocessor and components that use less current to generate more power. Compared with the 6A, this 6AL version also incorporates an adjustable rev limiter.

MSD Ignition Box Advantages

Capacitive discharge : The Digital 6AL box features a capacitive discharge ignition system. Most ignition systems use induction technology. In an inductive ignition, the coil must store and step up the voltage to maximum strength in between each firing. At high revs, as there is less time to charge the coil to full capacity, the voltage is not sufficient, resulting in a loss of power or top end miss.
The MSD system features a capacitor that is quicky charged with around 530 volts and stores it until ignition is triggered. Thanks to this design, the voltage sent to the positive terminal of the coil is always at full power, even at high revs, and each spark generates up to 135 mJ of energy.

Multiple sparks : The device produces multiple sparks at full power each time a spark plug is ignited. The number of multiple sparks produced decreases as the engine speed increases, but each series always lasts for 20° of crankshaft rotation. Above 3000 rpm, as it is technically impossible to light the spark plug more than once, the system produces a single powerful spark.

Digital operation : The Digital 6AL uses a high-speed RISC microcontroller to manage the ignition's output while constantly analysing various inputs such as supply voltage, trigger signals and rpm to perform ultra-fast compensation. The presence of filters ensures excellent protection of components against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

LED indicator : A red LED is located on the top of the 6AL box. It flashes to indicate the current state of ignition of the system.

Rev limiter : The Digital 6AL is equipped with a built-in rev limiter adjustable up to 11,000 rpm. The limit is set in 100 rpm increments using rotary switches located by removing the black cover on top of the 6AL.

Cylinder select : This MSD device is factory-set for use with 8-cylinder engines. However, it is quick and easy to reconfigure the system through the cylinder select wire loops on the side of the ignition for compatibility with a 4- or 6-cylinder engine.

Neat installation : The Digital 6AL wiring is routed to one end of the unit via a sealed and locked connector. This makes installation easier and keeps the wiring neat and tidy.
